Have you been diagnosed with high blood pressure? Do you have numbness and tingling in your arms and hands? If you suffer from these symptoms, then you are a perfect candidate for chiropractic therapy. Recent medical studies have shown that specialized chiropractic treatment and adjustments can reduce high blood pressure without the use of prescription medication.
Normally chiropractors are known for helping people who suffer from back pain, neck pain, and numbness in the legs, just to name a few. During these treatments, some medical information was discovered that led doctors to believe that some adjustments were having a positive effect on patients’ blood pressure. More studies have been done, and the overwhelming results show that a specialized treatment method can help reduce blood pressure, even if you are not experiencing neck or back pain.
The treatment is based on adjusting a specific vertebra at the base of the head. This vertebra, known as the C-1, is the main vertebra that supports the head. As your head weighs down on this vertebra, it can cause the nerves around it to be pinched. The slightest pinch may not cause you any pain, but it does upset the central nervous system, and your body responds by working your heart harder than necessary.
Often times if you have had a neck or spine injury that has healed, you may recover from your injury only to be left with high blood pressure. If the nerve is not completely un-pinched, the blood flow is affected in the arteries, causing the heart to pump harder. While your injury may have healed, a bi-product of the injury still may be affecting your central nervous system.
If your chiropractor determines that you have a pinched nerve near the C-1 vertebra, then the adjustments that will be made will focus on that individual vertebra. The vertebra will be moved back into place, allowing the never to become back to normal resting position. While this treatment may need to take place over several weeks, additional exercises may also need to be done to strengthen the muscles around the C-1, so that you will not have to continue with treatment for an extended length of time.
If you suffer from high blood pressure and tingling in the arms and hands, contact a chiropractor today. While this type of treatment is still in the experimental phases it has had much positive success.
